love’s all things art. She has a passion for teaching art and believes art is a great way to bring people together. She loves working with kids of all ages. She feels there is no limit when it comes to art. She is skilled in all elements of art, but painting is her favorite next to pencil drawing and shading. She is currently teaching art/painting at CIS P.R. Leyva for 8th graders.

is a relatively newer artist to the community of Carlsbad, but she has already made a name for herself here. Demitri owns and operates a step-by-step art studio named Destination DIY and was honored when the City of Carlsbad asked her to paint murals on an electrical box on the corner of Greene and Canyon. She has earned two art degrees giving her knowledge in both visual as well as performance arts.

is a dedicated individual with a passion for teaching and Visual Arts. Tori has had the pleasure of working with the Carlsbad Municipal Schools and loves having the opportunity to guide students on their educational journey and share her knowledge in the arts.

has studied with many Native American artists. She specializes in making traditional jewelry. She appreciates bringing modern design to conventional styles and loves inspiring personal views while respecting traditional methods. She hopes to expand ideas and make sure traditions continue in new generations. Dona spends her free time volunteering at schools by helping young artists blossom. She currently assists in art classes at JMA.

June 27th-July 1st
Oil Pastel Painting

In this lesson, students will learn how to create paintings with oil pastels. Oil pastels are a pigment, a wax, and oil mixed together - they’re like big, soft crayons that emulate oil paint. Students will learn various techniques including optical blending and layering. They will have the option to either recreate an image of their choice or come up with their own artwork.

Ceramics

Pinch pots, coil vessels, and drape bowls – Oh my! Students will get to hand mold simple ceramic pieces, add colored glazes, and get these pieces fired in a kiln allowing them to be food and drink-safe. Students will learn the entire process of making art with clay: molding, drying, underglaze, overglaze, and firing. Don’t know what all this lingo means? Your artist will be able to tell you by the end of this class!

In this lesson, students will learn how to paint a watercolor silhouette. Silhouette art is created by painting a dark shape that contrasts against a background. The goal is to create a solid shape that is instantly recognizable to the viewer despite not having features or details. The students will first pick out an image they would like to create into a silhouette. Once they have picked out their image, they will paint it a solid color, followed by painting the background in watercolor.

Students will learn how shapes are found in everything… even their day to day items! By the end of the class, students will create a realistic image of their favorite subject, and be able to show how it is made with shapes!

Students will create a design that can be woven using a loom. They will actively use design principles, problem-solving skills, and hand-eye coordination. They will learn techniques that, if chosen, could be used on larger woven products.
July 18th-July 22nd
Color theory

Students will learn the basics of color theory through fun projects and create a final acrylic paint composition. This course will lead students to explore the usage of color in art with guidance through the wonderful world of mixing colors!
2-point perspective

3rd - 12th grade
Teacher: april martinez
Students will learn how to draw a 2-point perspective building. This is a type of drawing also known as linear perspective. It is a method using lines to create the illusion of space. We will start with a horizon line, then add vanishing points and receding/orthogonal lines. Students will learn shading techniques to make their buildings stand out.

Students will identify and use natural stones to create jewelry and a wire tree sculpture. Not only will students learn the basics of identification but they will also learn application through jewelry and sculpture making. Using metal wire, students will create a tree-like element and enhance this sculpture with gemstones. They will also learn how to use wire to create gemstone jewelry.
July 25th-July 29th

This class will incorporate developmental skills to create fun paper art. Activities will include creating compositions like paper weaving and collages. In this course, students will learn how to use experimental and process-oriented techniques to create artwork using paper. This class is intended to promote creativity and fine motor skills!
