Becky Thompson

Becky Bircher Thompson was a pro basketball player, a softball player, and owner of a popular drive-in restaurant and sports store in Carlsbad.

After graduating from high school, Becky moved to Carlsbad from Arkansas and joined the All American Redheads' pro basketball team, where she played for two years. She came back to Carlsbad after traveling with the team and turned A&W Drive-In into Becky's, which was the spot to be throughout many of Carlsbad's "cruising" years.

She started the SportsCenter next to Becky's in 1988, selling various sports items.

Becky was also locally famous for her skill on the softball field. While carhopping, Becky caught wind of Carlsbad's women's softball program and joined right away. She started fast pitch softball at 18, and played for almost 40 years.

She has since sold Becky's and the SportsCenter, and as of 2017, she manages the concession stands at the Bob Forrest Sports Complex, where a softball field was named in her honor.

Becky has been an inspiration to Carlsbad with her 'go-getter' attitude and all the time she has contributed to our beautiful town.
