DR. EMMITT SMITH
“Living in Carlsbad was like the Promised Land that God promised the Israelites−peace, joy, and happiness here.” –DR. EMMITT SMITH
Dr. Emmitt Smith was a Civil Rights leader, educator, pastor, and was a heavily involved volunteer in the community of Carlsbad. He moved to Carlsbad from California in August of 1946. Dr. Smith married Naomi Malone in 1939, and had one child, Bernita Smith-Payne. He received an education at Philander Smith College, Fisk University, NMSU, and Reed College. Dr. Smith was the first Black student to receive the Education Specialist Degree at NMSU in 1957. Aside from mastering in Education, Dr. Smith also was ordained a minister in 1945. He was the pastor at Rice Memorial in Carlsbad for 14 years, and Thompson Chapel in Artesia for 3 years.
At his ordination ceremony in LA, Dr. Smith was approached by a woman who gave him an opportunity to become a teacher in Carlsbad, and he immediately took the offer. Right away, he began working to integrate the schools, as well as local restaurants and hotels. Dr. Smith worked in the Municipal System for 27 years, as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent. His dedication earned him a school renamed in his honor. While working at the schools, Dr. Smith along with Irvin P. Murphy; school superintendent, and Burl Blount; owner of many local restaurants, were credited with the integration of Carlsbad High School after getting the school board to allow Black students to graduate with the White students. With the help of these three men, the lives of many in Carlsbad were changed forever.
Dr. Smith also volunteered throughout his time in Carlsbad, always lending a helping hand. He participated on many boards and committees, such as the Governor Appointed State Health Council, the American Lung Association, the City Parks Department, the Downtown Lions Club, and the Red Cross Board. For his hard work and dedication, Dr. Smith was awarded numerous awards, such as the Lifetime Award from the Lions Club, Living Black History award, and was honored for Outstanding Community Service and Promotive Education from the MLK Scholarship Foundation. He also has a spot in the Southeastern New Mexico District Hall of Fame.
Today, Carlsbad's school district continues with its proud tradition as one of the highest-academic achieving districts in the state, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Smith and many others. His daughter, Bernita continues to keep his memory alive, following in his footsteps as an educator. Dr. Smith’s accomplishments in Carlsbad will continue to inspire the community.
